Dat voorspelde Jay Zwally, onderzoeker bij NASA in 2007. Dr. Jay Zwally is project scientist bij NASA’s ICESat missie. Zwally zei in een interview met National Geographic News:
“At this rate, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions….At this rate, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions.” En: “The Arctic is often cited as the canary in the coal mine for climate warming,” said Zwally, who as a teenager hauled coal. “Now as a sign of climate warming, the canary has died. It is time to start getting out of the coal mines.”

Het ziet er niet naar uit dat Dr. Zwally gelijk krijgt. Dat weet hij zelf intussen ook wel natuurlijk. In een interview in 2010 met EarthSky durfde hij zijn voorspelling al niet meer te herhalen. Wel haalde hij nog een keer de kanarie in de kolenmijn erbij om zijn bezorgdheid kracht bij te zetten.
Bovenstaaande voorspelling is een fraai staaltje van overdrijving, niet geheel onbekend in klimatologenland, helaas.
